LABOR FÜR
KUNST UND FORSCHUNG

ABOUT

The Laboratory for Art and Research at the Department Art and Music, University of Cologne is a platform for research-driven artistic practice, discourse and collaboration. It provides space for process-based, theory informed and socio-politically engaged projects, besides experimental research and collaborative learning through artistic means. Special attention is paid to questions that revolve around the relationship between art, research and the production of knowledge, especially the spaces of possibility and fields of action that this intersection enables.

PROJEKTE

THICK SPACE
March 8 – 9, 2018

On the occasion of the interdisciplinary conference The Spatial Turn and its Implications on (In)formal Learning Contexts, six international artists have been invited to develop artistic interventions on the iconic brutalist campus of Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Built on an open, rural field site in the 1960s, the founding members of the university wished to compensate for the decline of the industrial region of the Ruhr valley with—what was called—a “harbour in the sea of knowledge”. Advanced concepts of how to organize an architectural megastructure, a progressive understanding of material use, and the integration of landscape elements shape this literally striking example of post-war architecture.

With each intervention, the participating artists aim to connect their works to this significant specific site, with its historical, institutional, and social momentousness. In marking the large window front of the library, Jochen Schmith focuses on the location’s heritage buildings while Mirjam Thomann deals with a non-functional, ornamental part of the architecture in a poster series spread throughout the campus. Graphic works by Julia Horstmann are based on an analysis of the daily movements that take place on campus, while in a performative lecture, Karina Nimmerfall addresses the concept of the spatial turn as artistic method, by attempting a reverse-view back towards a once-utopian modernist past. With the use of current digital technologies, Andreas Bunte’s appropriations of pre-digital visualization of space inhabit the study area of the students, while Bojan Šarčević participates with an intervention in an undisclosed location of the campus. Following the conference, a documentation will be published.

Organized by Karina Nimmerfall and Mirjam Thomann as part of the conference The Spatial Turn and its Implications on (In)formal Learning Contexts, and hosted by Sandra Aßmann.

MASS OBSERVATION 2.0
October 2015 – March 2017

A collaborative project by the LABORATORY OF ART AND RESEARCH, Institute for Art and Art Theory / Intermedia and the Institute of Art History at the University of Cologne, with the OBSERVATIONAL PRACTICES LAB, Parsons, The New School, School of Art, Media and Technology, New York.

The transdisciplinary and intercultural project MASS OBSERVATION 2.0 brings together students from a wide range of disciplines in Cologne and New York. The project aims to research everyday life with a theoretical and practical, analytical and investigative, critical and experimental, online and offline approach, and to understand the everyday as a phenomenon that since modernity continuously shapes our perception of the world and increasingly generates altered forms of communication and relatedness under the influence of new technologies.

The aim of the project is to allow students an approach to research and analyze media-cultural phenomena—in particular the role and impact of new digital media in our society—in a transdisciplinary context, and to develop new methods and approaches to deal with them productively. In this context, the focus lies on the new field of artistic research: in a cross-cultural, oriented, research-based learning project, the role of artistic media practice is being looked at as a way of knowledge appropriation and production.

Based on the studies of the historical social research organization Mass Observation, founded in 1937, which was conducted by British anthropologists, artists, social scientists and psychologists to respond to the fact that the everyday life of "common people“ was not represented in the media nor in the political system of Great Britain at this time, the goal of this project is to deal with the question of how everyday life is perceived in a globalized world and how the ubiquitous requirements of social media to permanently perform oneself, and to meet the demands of connectedness, is affecting our sensibilities on a everyday level. What is the urban landscape made of in the digital age? And in what way is the understanding of democracy influenced by new forms of media and their offers to participate within a new global framework?

The project takes a decidedly intercultural position with the use of seminars conducted in collaboration with foreign universities via online conference tools and digital learning platforms, as well as through special projects and exhibitions in New York and Cologne. In conjunction with the development of experimental workshop and exhibition formats, the laboratory of Art and Research serves as a platform for learning and research, in order to discuss current social issues from a theoretical, practical and technological point of view.

The project was funded by the University of Cologne, Innovation in teaching (QVM)

FORMATE

FIELD SCHOOL

Collaborating with various international partner institutions, Field School is a wandering, site specific urban research and learning laboratory, as well as platform for process-based experiments, workshops, lectures and exhibitions. Dedicated to the exploration and renegotiation of urban space through artistic research practices, it engages in the heterogeneity of contemporary cities and their socio-political changes from a multiplicity of perspectives: practical, theoretical, and investigative.

FIELD SCHOOL: GRAZ
Forget Photography? (The Library Project)
November 13 – November 17, 2023

In collaboration with CAMERA AUSTRIA and INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART, Graz University of Technology. With workshops and contributions by Reinhard Braun, Christine Frisinghelli, Dejan Marković, Margit Neuhold, Barbara Petritsch, Nicole Six / Paul Petritsch, Anna Voswinckel and WERKER Collective.

Libraries are not passive, value-neutral places where knowledge is collected and made accessible, but active places where discourses are negotiated, contested, and confirmed. Starting from questions about the current role of photography in art and society, Field School: Graz engages with the library’s epistemological processes and knowledge, together with invited artists, curators, and experts. Taken up here, through workshops, lectures, and one’s own research-based artistic experiments, is Andrew Dewdney’s demand to forget photography as a strategy for reflecting on new approaches to organizing knowledge about the visual in the context of culture: How do processes of selection, evaluation, and ordering, as well as search and research, take shape? What (and whose) history of photography is being told? How can gaps be made visible? How does the library become a place of intervention and radical storytelling?

The Field School: Graz is supported by the International Office of the University of Cologne as part of COLOGNE SUMMER SCHOOLS

FIELD SCHOOL: BERLIN
Memory Acts
June 12 – June 16, 2023

In collaboration with SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY, School for the Contemporary Arts, Vancouver (Prof. Sabine Bitter). Hosted by feldfünf, Berlin. With lectures and workshops by Aleksandra Domanović, Dominique Hurth and Judith Raum as well as a contribution by Bettina Klein (Restless Monuments) with participating artists Mykola Ridnyi, Simon Wachsmuth, and Christine Würmell.

Against the current backdrop of a historical moment – with massive protests, statues toppled and streets renamed, and the discussion about structural racism and discrimination reaching not only the streets but also mainstream media – Field School: Berlin – Memory Acts explores, together with invited guests, contemporary processes of formal and informal remembrance and commemoration. Departing from Berlin’s urban historiography and mediated memories, Field School: Berlin provides a framework for workshops, lectures, and process-based artistic research experiments that reflect on memory and history including feminist, queer and decolonial approaches, addressing present legacies of marginalization, discrimination, racism, colonialism and the ethnographic tradition as well as the complex relationship between nationhood and cultural identity.

The Field School: Berlin is supported by the International Office of the University of Cologne as part of COLOGNE SUMMER SCHOOLS

FIELD SCHOOL: BERLIN
Questions for Learning Spaces
May 30 – June 4, 2022

In collaboration with KLASSE GRUND SCHULE ART EDUCATION, Hochschule für bildende Künste, Hamburg (Prof. Anja Steidinger) and SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY, School for the Contemporary Arts, Vancouver (Prof. Sabine Bitter). Hosted by feldfünf, Berlin. With lectures and workshops by Sabine Bitter, Julia Friedrich (Jüdisches Museum Berlin), Krabstadt Education Center (Ewa Einhorn, Jeuno Kim and Karolin Meunier), Markus Schega (Remise), Rosario Talevi (Floating University), Florian Zeyfang and Lena Ziese.

Departing from visits to institutional and self-organized spaces of knowledge production, the Field School: Berlin. Questions for Learning Spaces explores current issues around the spatial organization of education through workshops, lectures, and arts-based experiments, together with invited guests: What is the relationship between institutional and informal spaces of situated knowledge production? With which challenges, inclusion and exclusion mechanisms do they function, which design do they need? What spatial conditions enable and disable learning, and on what social negotiations are they based? What role do art and cultural practices play in this? In this context, places of education and the production of knowledge are understood in a broader sense, both as concrete and abstract places, concepts, buildings, arrangements, and narratives.

FIELD SCHOOL: BERLIN
The Studio and the City
December 13 – 17, 2021

Hosted by feldfünf, platform for process-based, transcultural projects, Berlin. With workshops, lectures and studio visits by Susanne Bürner, Discoteca Flaming Star, Annette Kisling, Stefan Römer, Thomas Kilpper and Jan Timme.

Departing from so-called post-studio practices and their influence on contemporary art, Field School: Berlin—The Studio and the City engages with artistic processes and actions located in everyday (physical and virtual) urban, social, collective extra-disciplinary spaces, situations, and contexts. Within this setting, the plea by artist, activist, and educator Suzanne Lacy for a ‘studio on the street’ will be taken up—a space where reflection and production are fluid and sometimes indistinguishable. Experimental investigative, analytical, performative, and participatory approaches to critical artistic practice and fieldwork will be explored in the form of workshops and practical exercises, complemented by lectures and studio visits with invited artists.

FIELD SCHOOL: DIG WHERE YOU STAND
Past Present Futures
May 24 – 29, 2021

In collaboration with the OBSERVATIONAL PRACTICES LAB, Parsons / The New School, School of Art, Media and Technology, New York. Supported by the International Office of the University of Cologne as part of COLOGNE SUMMER SCHOOLS. With lectures, virtual walks and workshops by Doris Frohnapfel (Cologne), Peter Spillmann (Berlin / Luzern), Aurora Tang / The Center for Land Use Interpretation (Los Angeles), Stefanos Tsivopoulus (New York) and Eva Weinmayr (London).

Our knowledge of cities and urban space—whether historical or current—is based less and less on direct experience, but increasingly on mediated records, e.g. images, data, documents of events. With digitalization and globalization, however, there has also been a growing uncertainty about what this data means. This changed sensitivity to images and data in turn produces approaches that not only generate new perspectives on the past, but above all renegotiate the relevance of history to the here and now.

Inspired in part by the international movement started in the 1970’s promoting active engagement with the history of a place, Field School: Dig Where You Stand is a site-based approach to interdisciplinary research investigating and reimagining the local. To what extent can artistic strategies that go beyond conventional methods of interpreting (historical) data be utilized to discover new points of view on our present by looking at contested histories beyond canonical narratives? How could the saying 'Dig where you stand!', used by an 'urban history from below', be reinterpreted against the backdrop of geography’s digital turn? What could digital derives look like as possibility for speculative stories of empowerment? Departing from these questions, Field School combines a critical inquiry into selected online archives (containing urban imageries, collective narratives and memories), digitally-mediated urban experiences, methods of critical navigation and geo-location tools with virtual field-research and self-conducted project work cross-linking Cologne, New York and other places.

FIELD SCHOOL: GRAZ
Die Stadt und das gute Leben: Counter-Temporalities and Public Time
October 26 – 30, 2020

In cooperation with CAMERA AUSTRIA, Labor für Fotografie und Theorie,
and The City and the Good Life as part of Site Specific Public Lessons.
With presentations and practical exercises by Anthony Carfello (Los Angeles), Katrin Meyer (Berlin / Düsseldorf) and Romy Rüegger (Zürich / Berlin).

Initially planned as a field trip to Graz, and given the current changes in public life, Field School: The City and the Good Life. Counter-Temporalities and Public Time was reconceived, dedicating its program to the exploration of a new public terrain through artistic investigations and joint reflections. Which new space-time relations, which forms of urban life and action will emerge from the impact of Covid-19? How does the ‘pandemic landscape’ inscribe itself in the relationship of body and space? Can the right to space, the right to the city, be re-conceived of as the right to time? Will new forms of space-time-body experience arise from the new entanglements of private and public, physical and virtual spaces? How can these connections be experienced, analyzed and utilized through artistic practices?

Departing from the project If Time is Still Alive (initiated by Urban Subjects as part of The City and the Good Life), Field School focuses on the possibilities of critical alternatives to the prevailing objectivist concept of time—in particular the understanding of time as social practice and utopia as temporal as well as spatial phenomenon—as artistic research tool used to investigate a new ‘pandemic landscape’.

FIELD SCHOOL: BERLIN
Critical Spatial Investigations into Urban Space
December 16 – 22, 2019

In collaboration with the OBSERVATIONAL PRACTICES LAB, Parsons / The New School, School of Art, Media and Technology, New York, and hosted by feldfünf, Berlin. With workshops, lectures and presentations by bfstudio-architekten, Folke Köbberling, Diana Lucas-Drogan, Maya Schweizer, Adam Page and Eva Hertzsch.

Drawing from theories of the everyday and concepts of spatial production Field School: Berlin focuses on the heterogeneous experience of the urban environment and explores the various factors that have produced it. How are the processes of urban transformation made visible, mediated and represented through architecture and built environments? How can socio-political changes and the production of space be explored, represented and negotiated in the field of art? What are the direct and indirect effects of digital technologies on the city? How are particular social and urban structures changing, and what are the visible indications of this shift? Field School: Berlin examines site-specific moments of urban change as it is expressed in the architecture, neighborhoods and everyday life of the city.

The Field School: Berlin is supported by the International Office of the University of Cologne as part of COLOGNE SUMMER SCHOOLS

STUDIO, ART & RESEARCH

Studio, Art & Researchis a series of events conceived of as an open, discursive public seminar. Dealing with current political, social, scientific, or everyday issues, it focuses on questions that revolve around the relationship between art, research, and the production of knowledge, as well on spaces of possibility and fields of action that this intersection enables.

Within a framework of guest lectures, workshops, screenings, exhibition and studio visits, along with joint close-reading and group critique sessions, it departs from the 'discursive turn' of post-conceptual artistic practices, exploring a variety of approaches, concepts and methods of research-based art, artistic research and arts-based research. To this end, it also addresses the phenomenon of institutionalized artistic research and its contradictions, as well as the question of how artistic practices change when understood as research, and are integrated into university research conditions.
